Tag ~ Video Tutorial

I'd like to share a mixed media tag video tutorial with you today. I made it with DecoArt Paints and a variety of stamps and stencils.

Managing the Speed

I'm learning a lot about editing and will try to do my next video at a slighty slower speed. I rarely take time to watch a video that's longer than 5 minutes. Do you?

I shortened this from 14 minutes down to 3.  It may be just a bit fast, so I'll adjust accordingly next time.

In any case, I find tags are wonderful to experiment because of their small size and affordability.

Gorgeous tag! I love the colours & it’s great to see how you build up the layers of colour & stencilling etc.

  2. Julie S on April 9, 2015 at 11:02 am

I loved watching you create! Beautiful tag. Love those warm colors.

Wonderful video Marjie and I don’t think it was to fast at all, your steps were clearly described and easy to follow. I’m not a fan of overly long videos either so appreciated your brevity and clarity. Love your tag and brilliant idea to test the placement of your focal image by stamping on clear packaging material, thanks so much for that tip!

  4. Corrine on April 5, 2015 at 12:55 pm

A tiny tweaky bit fast but nice simple demo anyone can use to get that real layering you create. Nice. xox

    • Marjie Kemper on April 9, 2015 at 7:12 am

Thanks Corrine. I’m going to try the next one with a slightly slower fast-forward.

  5. Diana on April 4, 2015 at 9:31 pm

i love this tag. I never thought about the string on a clear piece of packaging first!! Thanks for sharing that tip with us!!

  6. Judy M on April 4, 2015 at 9:28 pm

I thought your video tutorial was just right. Action sped up just enough to keep it moving, but not too fast that it would be hard to follow the steps. Your voiceover was clear and understandable. Loved the intro and exit music – and the tag!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 9, 2015 at 7:10 am

      Thanks for the feedback, Judy!

  7. Stephanie Rodgers on April 4, 2015 at 7:27 pm

Yay!!! Videos!!! I love video tutorials, but I’m with you … If it takes longer than 5 minutes, I’m out! I hate the videos where someone is talking for 5 minutes about the technique, products, etc., before they even start! I love that you sped this up! I had no problem following you, but it might’ve been a tad fast for some. Lol. I’d still watch if you slowed it down for a 5 min video. Haha

    • Marjie Kemper on April 9, 2015 at 7:13 am

      Thanks, Steph!

  8. Angi eharis on April 4, 2015 at 6:45 pm

Loved the tutorial! Tx for sharing and inspiring us, I know it is a lot of work, but please know how much I appreciate it as it is how most of my learning is done, along with books, so I am so thankful! Where do u get most of your stamps? Really liked some of yours, I was surprised the tag was mostly layering stamps, it looked like it had other types of layers, well done! Aloha, angi in hana

    • Marjie Kemper on April 9, 2015 at 7:11 am

Angi, I’ve been collecting stamps for about 15 years… I love prowling local stores whenever I can!

Great tutorial Marjie. Your commentary gives clear instructions and an insight into your thought process. Great motivation. Look forward to seeing and hearing more in the future! Thanks

  10. Maria Palazzo on April 4, 2015 at 5:27 pm

Great video! The pace was, right, your voiceover was clear and the instructions were easy to follow. I like both long and short videos so either one would work for me. Please keep them coming! Thanks!

  11. gio on April 4, 2015 at 5:20 pm

Love the video and the wonderful tag, thanks for sharing!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:43 am

      Thanks, Gio!

Oh, that was fun! I loved seeing the progression…and hearing your lovely voice! You make it look so easy…I end up with paint on my elbows! And I usually smear the stencil. I will probably watch this again. It was fascinating..and wonderfully done! Thanks, Marjie!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:43 am

Thank you, Kathy. Nothing wrong with paint on your elbows!

  13. Gill K on April 4, 2015 at 3:44 pm

I thought it was just right. When I saw there was a video, I was preparing to skip it until I read that it would only be 3 minutes long. I don’t have time just now to watch long videos however good they are. Glad I watched this one – many thanks.

  14. Jessica Sporn on April 4, 2015 at 3:36 pm

I think the video length is perfect. Your voice-over was clear, and I felt like I understood all the steps. Fabulous tag. I love those colors.

  15. Amanda Pink on April 4, 2015 at 1:49 pm

Fantastic tag! Fab vid -ya make the creativity look oh so easy! Great to put a voice to a face too! Looking forward to the next . xx

  16. Alison on April 4, 2015 at 1:26 pm

Hi Marjie!!! The tag is beautiful and the video was great!!! However, I think you should slow it down just a bit. Also, can you list the stamp company’s either during the video on in a caption on the blog?

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:53 am

Will definitely try a slightly less fast, fast-forward next time. Not sure about listing every product but I will try to find a happy medium…. thanks, Alison!

  17. Gigi on April 4, 2015 at 12:16 pm

For some crazy reason, my computer went bonkers on me and I wasn’t getting any of your blogs. When I realized this, I fixed the problem, I think. Anyway, imagine my surprise when I read that you had done several videos. WOW, now I have some catching up to do. As for this one, I think I would like it a bit slower….maybe closer to 4 minutes or so. I think it would be a little smoother. For me, the beauty of the higher speed is being able to see the individual parts and almost the whole at the same time, if that makes any sense. I do like the verbal introduction of the paints, and I agree that knowing what colors you are using would be great. Listing them also is a help. I don’t know anything about DecoArts so maybe sometime a tutorial on that would be great, especially if you use it a lot. Happy Easter!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:51 am

Gigi, I’m glad you found me again and thank you for the feedback…. I will definitely be doing more videos and taking all these ideas into account. Happy Easter to you!

  18. Anita Houston on April 4, 2015 at 11:59 am

Gorgeous tag! Your video is fabulous…great sound, love the music, the love the fast forward. I so need to get back to videos, but they are difficult for me.

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:47 am

Hi Anita – thanks! It’s been on my ‘to do’ for ‘too long’!

  19. Anne R on April 4, 2015 at 11:47 am

What a great video Marjie and I love the beautiful tag you made too.

I would have happily watched it in ‘real time’ but I still took all the information in, in your speeded up version and I really enjoyed it. I do appreciate what Barbara M said about the products, some people list them on their blog, which would save you saying it on the video. For people with less time than me, it is probably the perfect length. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful work now! Hope you are having a lovely Easter weekend. Hugs, Anne xx

    • Marjie Kemper on April 5, 2015 at 9:48 am

Anne, thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate so much all the perspective and tips.

  20. Barbara M on April 4, 2015 at 9:00 am

I’m with you. I lose interest during long videos no matter how much I like the project being shown. Your explanation and camera work were great. I would have liked more info about the specific colors of paints you used. I know you showed the colors but I didnt quite catch the names. BTW I recently discovered DecoArt products and I love them.

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 10:05 am

Great feedback, Barbara – thanks! I’ll try to name them in the next one.

  21. Julie Tucker-Wolek on April 4, 2015 at 8:20 am

Wow wow wow!! This is amazing!!! Gorgeous!!!!!!!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 10:04 am

      Thanks, Julie!

  22. Ruby C on April 4, 2015 at 8:06 am

What a beautiful tag. I love the depth of color. As for the video I think a little slower and longer would be better, but I enjoyed watching you work. The voice over was perfect and I really like how you panned the tag at the beginning and ending of the video. Nice music too. I will watch a longer video if it is interesting. Yours is. Thanks for sharing it.

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 10:04 am

Thanks, Ruby. I think the next one I will do try a slightly slower fast-forward, and see how that looks.

  23. Astrid on April 4, 2015 at 4:38 am

Great tag and a wonderful little video!! Loved seeing you in action with your stencils!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 7:54 am

      Thank you, Astrid!

      Thanks, Barbara!

  25. sharon on April 3, 2015 at 7:18 pm

Perfect video tutorial Marjie! I loved the length but still being able to see how you created the tag in that time!!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 7:55 am

Thanks, Sharon! I really like short ones myself.

  26. elle on April 3, 2015 at 7:08 pm

just about perfect! Moves along, explanations concise, music doesn’t overpower!!!

    • Marjie Kemper on April 4, 2015 at 7:55 am

      Elle, thanks for the feedback.
