Small Art Journal Pages

Art journaling in a small journal with Dylusions Ink Sprays (Marjie Kemper)

Do you like to work on small art journal pages? I usually work in big books, but I enjoy experimenting in a wide variety of sizes. I found a chipboard journal in my stash recently. All the pages are thick chipboard that should stand up well to a lot of wet media.

Small Art Journal Pages

This book measures 4.5″ X 6.5″ so each page is roughly the size of a postcard. I started out coating the page with white gesso. After it dried, I added modeling paste through Tim Holtz Rays Stencil. Once the paste was completely dry, I added Dylusions Ink Sprays.  These are two of my favorite colors (Squeezed Orange and Funky Fuchsia) especially when used together.  Click here to see lots of other free Dylusions tutorials.

These colors maintain their vibrancy when I work on manila cardstock. However on the chipboard, they became much more muted, even though I did apply gesso as a primer. This feels more like a pastel/sherbet look.

I still liked it but I wanted to ramp it back up, color-wise. I stamped a long sentiment stamp from Tim’s Words for Thought stamp set and used other ink pads with stencils in the background to fill the page.

Still embossing after all these years

While the ink was still wet, I sprinkled it with clear embossing powder and used my Embossing Tool to set it. I use this tool for embossing because it’s got the power/blower to emboss quickly. For almost everything else, I use my regular Ranger Heat It Tool.

I started using embossing powder again a few months ago when #the100dayproject started, and I needed to make 100 projects in 100 days. I had forgotten how much ‘ooooph’ it adds to a project. Do you like to emboss?
