Mixed Media Art Book Group – September

Mixed Media Art Book Group hosted by Marjie Kemper

Mixed Media Art Book Group

I was blown away by the response to the creation of the Mixed Media Art Book Group. Wow!  Within days we had 500 members, then 800, then 1000…. we are now 1600+ strong. You can read all about the book group here.

I am so happy to have formed this community, but want to remind you it is a short-term group. I’d planned to run it for three months, but have changed that to two months. A combination of limited print book resources and limited time to manage the daily moderation has caused the change.

September Book Selection

We will focus on Seth Apter’s book, The Mixed Media Artist, for the month of September. Please note this is not your typical instructional book, so you need to come at this one with a more open mind than usual.  There’s a ton of inspiration in the book, many creative prompts, and some step-by-step instructions, but not for every featured project.

Read, Create, Share

Participants share their work in the Group, encourage each other, and spread creative enthusiasm. I offer optional weekly prompts, and I encourage members to work on anything that inspires them from the book, at any time during the month.  I’ve created this project based on a combination of ideas in Seth’s book, plus my own personal style.

Altered Index Card with Monoprint, Collage and Diecut (Marjie Kemper)

This is an altered index card that started out with a monoprint from a Gelli Plate. I’ve layered the background with paint, inks, stencils and old-school rub-ons. My old supplies met new ones in the form of Seth’s splatterproof die and Tim Holtz’s collage man/dog.

Seth will send a fabulous prize package to one random winner at the end of the month.  Seth will ship internationally, just like Dina Wakley (the August author) did. Her prize was won by a group member who lives in Denmark.  Here’s a peek at Seth’s generous prize:

  1. Love your Seth-inspired piece – strong colours and great layers create a depth of meaning. I’m sorry to hear the group will be short-lived – especially when it’s clearly so popular – but at least I won’t have to spend quite as long wondering whether to give in to the evil FB-empire in order to join in!!

  2. Great make, Marjie! I just finished an afternoon of Gelli print making at a park with my craft friends. I need to complete the journal pages now. Thanks for the inspiration.!
