Kemper art journal 03/9/2014

We had 50+ degree  weather here in New York yesterday and I spent the day walking around Manhattan and checking out studios and galleries with my friend Jessica Sporn.  It was delightful! We kept remarking on how good we felt to be comfortable outside after these long winter months, and besides enjoying the warm weather, it was fun to peek into 20+ artists’ studios and galleries we visited as part of the High Line Open Studios.

When I got home I was inspired to pull out  my paints and have a play.  We saw some amazing studios, and some kind of creepy ones, to be honest. But paint was evident everywhere and I wanted to get my hands on mine.

I started by painting my page with a light blue wash and doing a bit of stamping and stenciling with Ranger’s Archival Ink before adding modeling paste through a stencil (circles) and gel medium through a stencil (measuring tape).  I used archival ink through Julie’s new Crossed stencil.

I love layering stamps with different colors and the ‘pop’ factor you get with Ranger’s Jet Black Archival Ink as your top layer.  I wanted to join in the new challenge blog called A Vintage Journey, so I made this tag and decided to work the journal pages around it.   The eye chart and hand stamps are from Tim’s Oddities stamp set.

I used older scrapbook stickers for the big words, and Tim Holtz’s chit chat stickers for the smaller ones.

The arrow is part of a punch-out page from Scenic Route that I’ve had for ages. I colored it with Distress Inks so it would blend into the page.

Love how the gel medium dried in the measuring tape stencil.  I used a black gelato around the edges and rubbed my finger into it to blend the color, then lightly ran that same finger over and into the raised areas.

Please take a look over at A Vintage Journey, where many of my friends are leading the way as creative guides. Thanks for visiting!
