Focus on Distress Stains

I love Distress Stains.  I made this tag and series of ATCs for Frilly and Funkie to show how versatile they are… it’s hard to choose what surface to work on with them, as they work well on so many.  The most convenient thing about Distress Stains is how quickly they can cover a surface. You can cover a tag, art journal page, canvas, etc. in no time flat.

You can use them on their own, in combination with other stains, inks, paints, gesso, or water. I made this tag by blending three colors (pine needles, mustard seed, and tea dye) with water:

After drying with my heat tool, I stamped over it with Jet Black Archival Ink. I also dyed the flowers and ribbon with a combo of pine needles and mustard seed. Here it is in process:

There are so many options with Distress Stains it would impossible to show them all in one post. I decided to stick with a single color (Mustard Seed) and show it to you on different surfaces: (1) Glossy Paper, (2) Watercolor Paper, (3) Manila Card Stock, (4) Sticky Back Canvas, (5) Kraft Resist Paper primed with Picket Fence Distress Stain, and (6) Kraft Resist Paper (bare). Here they are, each with a single coat of Mustard Seed:

Isn’t it amazing how different the color looks based on which ATC surface was used? Here they are finished off:

To the ATC bases I added:

#1 ~ Jet Black Archival Ink

#2 ~ Manganese Blue Archival Ink

#3 ~ Sepia Archival Ink and Vintage Photo Distress Ink

#4 ~ Pine Needles Distress Stain on flourish; Scattered Straw, Spun Sugar, and Fired Brick Distress Stains as well as Vintage Photo Distress Ink on Flowers

#5 ~ White Picket Fence on grid stamp; Black Archival Ink on face and word

#6 ~ Vintage Photo Distress Stain on edges and to dye corrugated cardboard strip; Antique Linen & VP Distress Inks on person; VP Distress Ink on letters and background hearts
