Compendium of Curiosities 3, Challenge #27

Welcome to the latest challenge based on Tim Holtz’s book, the Compendium of Curiosities, Volume 3.  Our new challenge is to use Embossing Diffusers, which are a cool tool similar to embossing folders, but with added benefits.  In a nutshell, they allow you to alter the areas you are embossing on a piece of paper, leaving either the inner or outer portion of the area raised or plain. (You’ll find the technique on page 61. If you need a copy of the book, you can get an autographed copy from Tim right here.)

Mixed media art journal - Marjie Kemper CC3C#27

I worked in a really large art  (9″ X 12″) art journal and used Distress Paints, Distress Inks, and Archival Inks for my project.  That massive tag measures 5″ X 10.5″ and fits nicely in this size journal.

I used the Layered Butterfly die and corresponding embossing folder, along with several other Texture Fade embossing folders.

I placed the Diffuser on the Cracked texture fade so I would have a clear (unembossed) area to stamp my sentiment. Can you see it in the picture below? Of course, I did a lot of stamping and stenciling to finish the page.

Wow! The color is really spectacular! Never would have thought to use a large tag in a journal but it fits perfectly and really allows one to use techniques (like embossing) that one normally doesn’t find in a bound journal… How ingenious!

  27. Amanda Pink says:

Absolutely stunning! Marjie As always you rocked the colours, the stencilling and choice of stamps ! I could spend hours looking at your work ! x

  28. Beautiful! I always forget about the diffusers and then I see somebody use them and remember that I meant to pick them up AGES ago. Yummy color choices, Marjie.

  29. Marjie, this one is too gorgeous to live inside an art journal. It needs to be liberated and hung in a frame on the wall. That color combo is magnificent! All the stamped/embossed/die cut layers make me feel as though I could walk right into the page, and lay down in sun drenched field of purple clover. Soooo gorgeous! I always am inspired by your work, but this one is a special favorite!

  30. I just LOVE this color combination Marjie! The composition is so beautiful as well! Great idea to use the rectangular embossing diffuser – look amazing with the cracked embossing folder!

  31. Love the addition of the oversized tag to your journal page, Marjie! My Vol. 3 is currently on loan to a friend, so am at a loss here….but, only temporarily. Great color palette and theme here for this wonderful technique. A simple one, actually, that yields impressive results! Nicely done, my friend!

  37. Marjie…your art has such a distinctive style! Love the bright colors on this! Sort of your signature look. Love the layered embossed butterfly. All of your layers of stenciling and so perfectly placed. You always amaze me with that! Your embossed rectangle done particularly for the sentiment looks fantastic.
