Compendium of Curiosities 3 ~ Challenge #15

Welcome!  It’s time for Challenge #15 celebrating Tim Holtz’s book, the Compendium of Curiosities, Volume 3.  Our new prompt is to use the Cabinet Card Pocket (details can be found on page 38 – if you still need a copy, you can get one autographed by Tim right here.)

Our sponsor this week is Inspiration Emporium, and a random winner will receive a $50 shopping spree on their online store. There are also prizes donated by Tim and Mario for the Curiosity Crew’s favorite project.  You’ll find the Rules and FAQs at Linda’s site… please take a moment to read these so you are definitely in the running for the prizes.

I used this awesome pic of my niece Kelsey when she was 2 or 3… talking on the radio in the fire truck (her dad was a volunteer firefighter). I love pull-outs on scrapbook pages, and the Pocket Cabinet Card was the perfect place to tuck my journaling, while keeping the bulk of the 12X12 page pretty open.

I embossed the Cabinet Card with two of Tim Holtz’s Sizzix Texture Fades and applied Distress Ink over the edges in colors complimentary to the patterned paper. The papers are from the Dreamer collection from 7 Dots Studios (love them!)  I barely altered the papers – just distressed around the edges with jet black archival ink.

For the pull-out, I tore a scrap of the patterned paper and then used Ranger’s Distress Inks to add color to the manila tag.

After adding more color with stencils and Distress Inks, I wrote my caption/story and embellished with Idea-ology parts and a couple of little black ‘burst’ paper punches.  Whenever you have a spare piece like this tag, adding something from the ‘main piece’ will make it seem like they belong together.  Because I used a scrap of the patterned paper and the repeated black punched pieces, it seems like the tag really is related to the page.

I used more scraps of the patterned paper for adding stamped sentiments. Tore them randomly and inked the edges. I was so happy to have those stamps come to mind, and to know where they were in my studio!  (All because I am in a major reorganizing mode — see this post re: the great stamp purge).

And finally, my title… which really made me laugh.  I’ve looked at this pic of Kelsey for several years (inherited) and knew I always wanted to do something with it.  Suddenly that Carly Rae Jepson song came to mind and it was DONE.

Thanks so much for the visit today. If we’re not already connected, please sign up for my newsletter or follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, or Twitter.

Hope to see you at CC3C!

  36. Marjie, this is a great layout and such a cute photo. Love the pull-out feature. You have me wondering, however, about the technique on your actual cabinet card. Did you emboss it? It seems there is texture and stencil, or perhaps texture fade? You’ve got me curious!

    • Marjie Kemper says:

Thanks, Annette! Your question made me realize I forgot to include the photo showing the embossing – yes I used two of Tim’s Texture Fades (photo and info added now).
