Art Journaling with Washi Tape
Unusual Backgrounds
Ever make a washi tape background for your projects? It's a great way to use up your stash.
I was putting away some rolls of washi tape the other day, and I decided to quickly do a background in my art journal with them.
As you can see, I should definitely try to use these more. They multiply like rabbits! I'm like a kid in a candy store when I see these and at an average of $1-2 a roll, it's easy to slip one into my cart on occasion.
I like mixing a variety of widths, colors, and patterns.
That Dina Wakley stamp looks so bold in her plain black-ink-on-white-paper that I decided not to color her at all (just hit the edges with black ink). I added some StencilGirl words (Carolyn Dube) and one of their grid stencils (MaryBeth Shaw). This is a little minimalist for me, but I like it.
Mixed Media Art Membership Group
Have you heard about the Mixed Media Art Membership Group? It's a monthly membership that I host that includes facilitated learning through a Project of the Month (with closed-captioned video instruction), Themed Challenge of the Month, a live Zoom Create-Along Session where we all work on our art together, and lots of resources such as the Project Vault, Technique Vault and Resource Library. Best of all is the supportive and inspiring community we enjoy in our private Facebook Group and the gated private forum on the site where I host the videos and resources.
The group is only open for new members a few times a year, so please add your name to the waiting list to be the first to know when the doors open again. Click here to add your name to the waiting list.

Gorgeous Marjie! Love the washi tape background! Thanks for joining along with the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge!
This is so stunning Marjie!! And what a great idea. Love the background and the focal image. Thank you so much for sharing with us at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog!!
Washi tape is my new favorite thing. I only have one roll, though, so I will have to try your trick of slipping one into my cart on occasion. Very beautiful work! Thanks for sharing!
WOW! This came together beautifully! Thanks so much for another great entry at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog! – Ashli :)
I am so impressed with your collection, a tad more than my own …. to say the very least LOL.
I love this idea and it works so well having the strong black and white image against the tapes.

Wow! So many washi tapes! :) great way of creating a background! Love the idea.. X
what an awesome background with your washi tapes! Makes me want to go out an buy some…was that the idea? Great idea – and this would work well with strips of gelli prints too!
Looks awesome Marjie!! Oh yes I have my own little stash of the stuff too & it’s even easy for me to sneak a couple rolls into my online carts too!! Great idea & one I must try too!!!
What a great way to use those tapes Marjie! Your page is fabulous! xxx
Wow Marjie, that is such a great idea for washi tape – I seem to have a fetish for buying but not using mine and since I find journaling difficult I may just give this idea a try in my only once used Dyan Reaveley journal! The fridge did look impressive with the gold tape, not sure I could go that far though! Anne xx
Oh wow love this idea Marjie!!! I’m going to try it out although I don’t have as many rolls of tape as you!!! LOL – looks fantastic!
Such a fantastic idea and a great way to use the washi tape. I’ll keep this idea in mind ;)
Love the page, I did one earlier in the month using all my many rolls of washi tape, I don’t have as much as you, but I had enough I really needed to actually use instead of hoard it ;) LOL
Thanks for sharing always love seeing what you create next :)
Love it Marjie ! What a great idea for all this Washi junkies out there !

I have a washi tape fetish and this is a fabulous way to use some of those tapes. Nice idea!! Thank you for sharing.
Holy Washi tapes Marjie!!
I love it! What a cool journal spread- well done!
Total genius, Marjie! I have so many rolls of washi tape that I laugh and comment that I will die before I can possibly use it all! Will definitely try this technique, my friend! Thanks for the inspiration!
great idea Marjie! I have rolls upon rolls of washi that need to hit a project. When I saw the duct tape fridge…my first thought was wow! then I saw the meticulous work and thought OCD…I would never make it past 3 rows! :)
LOL Dara Lynn…. you and me both! I gave that gal kudos for creativity but I’d never have the patience or the carefulness to have it come out so well.
What a nice effect the tape has on pages. Then adding stencils and stamps? Awesome!
I’m the same way! I have a big ol’ stash of the stuff, but don’t pull it out nearly enough. What a great way to use some of it without ‘wasting’ it. ;)
Gorgeous! I loveeeeee how you used the tapes!!!!!
I have a box like that too. Great use of the tapes….we are addicted to washi! xox
Love this and what a great way to use those tapes!! You certainly have a great collection of them and I have to say, it’s a great way of storing them too! Oh and you guys in the States are so lucky, they are way more expensive here… :( Off to check out the Pinterest board now….
I too forget about all my wash tape. That’s a great idea and sometimes minimal is perfect. And now for the duct tape…….I think it’s a genius idea for an old appliance. I like it!!
