Art Journaling with Pan Pastels (Stencil Tutorial)

art-journaling-pan-pastelsThanks so much for the incredible response to my guest spot at Sizzix… I really appreciate all of your comments and emails about that!  For today’s post, I’ve used Pan Pastels to color this art journal page.  Kim is going to be stocking Pan Pastels over the weekend at Eclectic Paperie, and I will be teaching an online class using them early in February.

Today I’m linking to Art Journal Every Day, Frilly and Funkie, and the Wendy Vecchi yahoo group. Frilly & Funkie has a Follow Your Muse theme, and the Wendy challenge calls for at least one of Wendy’s stamps and stencils. I used her large alpha background stamp all over the page, inking it randomly, then applied Pan Pastels for color.

I used the negative (frame) part of Wendy’s heart stencil, and laid another stencil on top to give my heart texture. I forgot to take a picture at this stage, but here’s one I took of an earlier attempt, just so you see what I mean about combining stencils:

I found that particular stencil pattern to be too large for the heart, so I saved that page for scrap and did another one using the small houndstooth pattern.  Then I cut a Sizzix Movers & Shapers heart from the scrap page, and rather than use it, I traced around the negative space of it and made a thin hollowed heart frame.  I placed it down on the bottom right and used black gelato to trace around it, and put the original piece between the left and right hearts.

Thanks so much for visiting today.  I hope you’ll follow my blog and sign up for the Eclectic Paperie blog – you can subscribe by email to both to get alerts when there’s new blog content.

Class content and photos for my class will be up within the next few weeks, and I promise you, you will love what you can do with the Pan Pastels, no matter what your personal style may be!

Your comments are very much appreciated!

  4. A lovely page with great texture and colour. I pulled my PP’s out a couple of weeks ago for a project and just love working with them. They are great for using with stencils like your have done. I love teh way the colour intensifies around the edges of the design due to the build up of pigment. You’ll have so much fun at your PP class.

  5. Marjie, the double stencil idea is awesome! Never would have thought of that. And your color blending is to die for! Thanks so much for playing along with us at Frilly and Funkie!

  6. Gorgeous piece, Marjie! The pattern just pops from the screen!

  7. A fabulous combination of colours and the hearts together balance the page beautifully. I just love the stencilling and then the black letters to finish it off.
Good luck with your PPs class.

I have 2 stencils…I won them as blog candy. I finally broke one in this week. I have to confess, while I love this kind of art, it’s very far out of my comfort zone. Having said that, I love the way you used that black stamp/stencil to anchor the piece. It adds so much. And I like that some hearts are filled, while others are evacuated. Creates real visual interest. The colors are great…the purples and red oranges create so much energy. You never cease to amaze me.

  26. Colors and texture really pop on this piece. Caught my eye right away.

  27. Fantastic page Marjie, great use of the stencils! x

  28. This is fabulous, Marjie!!! Love how you did the hearts!!!

  29. Great page Marjie…what a good use of the different colours…your template is amazing as well as your heart. Was the typewriting already on the paper? It looks so nice as a background.
