Art Journaling ~ Who Asked You?

Kemper art journal 090414

I recently bought Dyan Reaveley’s new Survivor stamps and as soon as they came, I knew I had to have a play right away. They’re quite large (as big as my hand) and I love the expressions on their faces and Dyan’s signature wild hair. This is my large (9X12) journal, to give you a feel for the size of the face stamp.

I started out creating a green-ish border using up bits of leftover 7 Dots Studio papers.  I also added some torn printed tissue paper and a combination of Golden acrylic paints and spray paints. Here you can see the first few layers of stenciling with (in yellow) a StencilGirl stencil and (in teal) a Balzer Designs one.

After stamping the face image on the right hand page, I covered her with post-it notes before adding several additional layers of color with stamps and stencils.

I picked up those grey letters at Michaels the other day.  They’re reusable masks.  Pretty cool!  So, masks are the opposite of stencils.  They cover something, you add color, and when you lift off the mask what you had beneath it will show.  I was wondering what I wanted to say on this page and this question came to mind.  Dyan has some very funny and edgy stamps on the market, so I imagine that’s where my mind went on this one. (For instance, one of her Christmas stamps says “Jingle your own damn bells.”)

I decided to color only her eyes, since there was so much color elsewhere.

I used a dark blue spray paint to cover my question.  The page seemed off balance so I tried to pull it together by using a reverse chicken wire stencil across the top and sides, with the same dark blue.

I really like how those letters turned out.  Hope those new masks retain their stickiness and are just as good the next time I use them.
