Art Journaling with Dylusions Ink Sprays (Tutorial)

Dylusions Ink Sprays

Art journal with Dulusions Ink Sprays - Marjie KemperI found a new challenge blog last week that is right up my alley – The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge.  Their June theme is Spray Inks & Mists, so I jumped right in to create this spread with Dylusions Ink Sprays.

I started out by spraying three colors of Dylusions Ink Sprays on my right hand page and misting them with water till they ran.  I’ve been fortunate to take Dyan’s classes in person. One essential tip she shares is that if the colors aren’t moving, they’re not wet enough.  In that case, add more water or more Ink Sprays to make it happen.

Then press the blank page into the wet one to absorb the excess color.  I added some yellow Ink Spray and water to fill any places that didn’t have color. If you have loads of time let it air dry overnight and you’ll have a wonderful surface waiting in the morning.  If you’re in a rush roll a paper towel roll (the whole roll) back and forth over the wet ink to absorb most of it, then air dry for a few minutes or use your Heat tool if you must.  (Do try one leaving it overnight to dry on its’ own at least once, though… it’s a different look than the ‘aided dry.’)

I’ve wanted to use this 12X12 Prima stencil for awhile, and today was the official christening.  I used it ‘full on’ on the left hand page, and then turned it around and around repeatedly to use just the flowers themselves to form a border on the right.  I sprayed a dark green Dylusions Ink Spray for the flowers.

In my background I’ve used stencils from StencilGirl Products and Tim Holtz.  I also added some diecut pieces from Tim’ Honeycomb Sizzix Frameworks die.

I am gradually building up collection of Dylusions as I totally fell in love with them. Only have 6 so far & can be stingy (tight) as don’t want to use them up. Doing a double spread like this makes total sense to double their use! Fabulous colours & although I am aware of mixed media blog, haven’t bn for a while. Thank you for link. :))

That is a terrific spread. I love the colours – the tip about leaving the inks to dry overnight is one I will try, patience is not something you’d associate with me usually. 🙂

  26. This is beautiful with those gorgeously intense colours that you worked with.
Marjie, I rarely use spray inks however (dissolved walnut ink crystals and paints are my go to items) am in total agreement, leaving to dry overnight is always preferable as the results, to my mind, are more stunning than aided by a heat gun. Also, for anyone who doesn’t know, it was a good tip to share, pressing the pages together which also is good for non-journaling projects as well.

  32. A fabulous vibrant page Marjie and a great tutorial! Must try that tip of letting the inks dry overnight…. I have never managed to successfully spray inks through a stencil, they always bleed underneath,,,, Any tips on that one?
