Art Journal Page: Starting Point

EmbraceStart
I’m finishing up an amazing online class taught by Kelly Rae Roberts called Flying Lessons. It’s about building a creative business and the course content has given me a super charge every day for the last 5 weeks.  So much to think about!

One recurring theme on the class ‘boards’ was people expressing concern about being ready, about having it all together (whatever it may be for each of us… we are a varied lot of writers, artists, quilters, painters, photographers, jewelry makers, etc.) There are so many possibilities to consider besides the blog… websites, online and offline shops, craft shows, publications, etc.

Kelly suggested there will never be a time when all our ducks are in a row… we should just start. Her words: “Embrace your starting point!” With that in mind, I had fun stepping away from the learning and making this page for the Simon Says Stamp and Show challenge this week. I made this while watching the bold backgrounds chapter of Kate Crane’s new dvd… what a treat that is! Kate shares loads of tips and techniques and I learned a ton watching it.

Hard to pick a ‘favorite’ but I count Dylusions Ink Sprays and stencils as some of my all-time faves. The arrows are a fun mix of chipboard, stamps, stencils, and rub-ons. And going with progress not perfection, I didn’t freak out when I stamped one of the letters wrong.  It’s all okay!

My starting point is expanding as I am working to open at Etsy shop. It’s quite a learning curve and I’m looking forward to figuring it all out!

As always, my sincere thanks for your support and encouragement… I read each and every comment and truly appreciate your taking the time to visit.

Also popping this into Art Journal Everyday, where my friend Carolyn Dube is the guest blogger today.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend…

Marjie

Fabulous. The color immediately grabbed me, and the vibrant yellow/orange drew my eye right to the center. The bold sentiment led my eye all through the layout. I actually thought the backwards “a” was intentional, as it really caught my eye. I loved all the arrows pointing into the center of the page, and the leaves look so dimensional here. Gotta love that. You just keep getting better and better, Marjie…your work is a like a rich, delicious dessert. I always want to sit down with a nice cup of coffee and savor it bit by bit. Absolutely wonderful. Good luck with the Etsy shop….

  9. Stunning!!! Great colour and the wording really pops out!!

  16. sue schultheis says:

Embrace your starting point can be applied to so many different facets of life, including those of you wanting to expand. Love this saying and plan to use it for my own quest. Thanks.

  17. Do you know you have already embraced your starting point and are well on the way to opening that Etsy shop. I wish you the very best of luck in the world Marjie, but I know already it will be such a success because you create the most wonderful things. Art is what we make and create day by day, there is no right or wrong, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; your work is very beautiful.
Take heart and go for it.
    hugs {brenda} xox

  21. Your “Journal Page Starting Point” looks great, Marjie! Also, I like your top photo – creative! Thanks for sharing great tips. Cheers!

  22. Marjie, just popping over from Art Journal Everyday. Love your Starting Point page! It’s bold and exciting and fun with the letter stamped backwards (I like it). I’d love if you would come over and follow me!

  23. That is such good advice from Kelly – just start! It all sounds so easy but I guess it can only go one of two ways and with you I think the way is forward, onwards and upwards, because it is something you really want to do. I did notice the ‘a’ but thought you were being terrifically arty and I really like it! The red is lush and warm and cosy against the black lettering which is bold and brave, much like I think you are. Off now to look for Kate’s DVD. I wish you much luck with whatever you choose to do, we will still be here following you! Crafty hugs, Anne x

  24. These colours are so deep and yummy I could cheerfully just dive in and swim around in them:) Didn’t even notice the ‘wrong’ letter until you mentioned it.
Did you know that the brain automatically changes things like that so we can read words even if they are spelled incorrectly or written down in the wrong way? No worries eh?
Taking huge leaps into the unknown is scary but when I had to make a massive decision about a work change this year I kept referring back to a stamp sentiment; ‘You can never cross the ocean until you leave the shore’. Time to set sail Marjie – what’s the worst that can happen? We’ll all continue to love you and your work regardless of anything else and you won’t look back and wonder ‘What if?’
Wishing you the very best of luck and courage in your new venture and a very happy weekend. Hugs, Buttons x

  30. I downloaded her course you know because of you! I’ve read bits but need a break to really take it in. You my dear, are on full force ahead! Marvelous color and design here! Love your border, but the sentiment is moving! Love the reverse “a” or is that really a “g”??? Your mind is brilliant!!!

  31. That truly is great advice, and your pages are very striking, marjie!
    🙂

  32. Deep, rich, beautiful. I agree, the Dylusion line is so nice. I’ve never heard of K.Crane. I can’t wait to hear about your next steps. Exciting!
